After reading an earlier post on a PX2 Ranger build we did, our client came to me and said “I want something like that, but better” and dropped the keys to his brand new 2019 XLT in my hand. From that point, I knew it was going to be a fun job.
He wanted it set up for touring with a camper trailer in tow, for long trips around oz. Not knowing exactly what he wanted, he trusted our expertise and took our recommendations. For his suspension, we went with the Dobinsons 2″ lift lift with remote reservoir adjustable shocks and 500kg constant load springs. To finish off the look, we added some 18×9 Fuel Crush alloy rims and 33″ Nitto tyres.
Like all our trays, the usable space underneath is critical to good planning and listening to what the customer wants out of his vehicle. In this case, we went with sacrificing the space for a trundle draw, and installing a 60L poly diesel tank with 12v diesel transfer pump, and a second filler neck. This gives him twice the range, no need to handle smelly jerry cans nor have the generic yellow eyesores on the back of the tray. To top it off, we installed a 12v Wema fuel sender, and tank gauge in the under-tray toolbox which illuminates when you open the door.
Similar to the fuel system, we also fitted a 60L poly water tank, 12v commercial pump with our hidden tap outlet behind the toolbox door, and a low pressure gravity feed tap on the tow bar. To top that off we also added a water tank sender, and gauge in the toolbox adjacent to the fuel gauge.
With the tow bar, we swapped out the genuine Ford one for a high-mount version. Reason for that is, once you take the tub off, the genuine one hangs out considerably low and likely to get hung up. Topped off with a hitch fitted recovery point & 8T bow shackle.
The tray itself, has integrated rear parking sensors, genuine rear view camera, aluminium tapered under tray toolboxes, one piece aluminium guards, a removable rear ladder rack with a neat little LED light built in which turns on when you unlock the car, aluminium multi-point tie down track affixed to the top brim of the tray, and a neat looking aluminium half canopy.
Up front we fitted an aluminium Rival bull bar with integrated fog lights and parking sensors. Stedi type X Pro spot lights, blacked out grill and a Rhino Rack pioneer platform on a backbone system.
Inside the canopy features our signature motion controlled LED lighting, which automatically turns on on the slightest movement within a 3m radius, it also has a 1-10min timer so it will never turn off when your standing around, but reliable enough so you can walk away with the doors open knowing it’ll turn off and not flatten your battery.
The drivers side has a full size pull out draw around 250 deep, with a carpet laminated benchop above, USB and Cig socket for charging your junk, down the sides of the draw is a great little nook for easy to access things like recovery straps, first aid kit, rain jackets and the like.
Open the passenger side and you’re greeted with a Waeco Dometic CRX65 upright fridge, and a Delongi espresso coffee machine tucked in next to it. Hidden behind the fridge is a 110ah slim-line AGM battery, which is managed by a Redarc BCDC1220D with solar input. We’ve also added an LCD display to the solar input so it shows you the amps, volts and and watts, so you can adjust the solar blanket to get peak performance on the fly. Tucked in to the right side wall to the fridge is a Redarc 2000w pure sine wave inverter to run his coffee machine and a toaster, still leaving access to the switch/controls and 240v plug. To the left on the wall is our our standard control box/sub board which houses the fuses for the lighting and USBs etc, this is also where we fit the BCDC charger so you can check the lights at a glance. Finishing off the canopy, we’ve added central locking and two spare tyre cradles on the back.
